Prostate Cancer

"Every three minute a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer"
Prostate Cancer Foundation

What is prostate cancer?

The prostate composed of several different types of cells but it is the glandular cells that can be the source for much concern. It is located in underneath the bladder and front of the rectum. The seminal fluid is made of glandular cells that are secreted by the prostate. Often the trouble starts right there. Almost all cancers of the prostate are glandular cell cancers. Adenocarcinoma is the medical term for a cancer that starts in glandular cells.

Diagnosing prostate cancer:

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is given and certain levels of the prostate antigen are measured. Ranges from a value around 4 or less is considered to be in the normal range. A reading higher than 4, but less than 10 is usually due to a benign enlarged prostate. A reading higher than 10 may also just be benign prostate disease, but the higher the level of PSA, the more likely it is to be cancer. A man's PSA levels will usually increase with age.

The other method of checking for a healthy prostate is the digital rectal exam. The prostate is manipulated by the doctor to determine if the gland is enlarged. If the gland is enlarged the further tests are called for to determine the exact reason for the enlargement.

Prostate cancer treatment

The American Canncer Society has some great advice when it comes to treatment.

"The treatment you choose for prostate cancer should take into account:

  • Your age and expected life span
  • Your feelings about the side effects associated with each treatment
  • Any other serious health conditions you may have
  • The stage and grade of your cancer
  • The likelihood that each type of treatment will be curative"

It isn't the purpose of this web site to be the complete guide to prostate cancer, but to open the topic for thought and discussion. Please check with some of the information displayed on this page for more complete education on the subject of asbestos lung cancer.
